Optimal protection with the VW T2 67-79 windshield rubber
Please note: A-quality!
A part that will come up in every restoration is the window rubbers; in most cases, these are weathered, leading to leakage. A high-quality rubber is an important aspect; lower quality can lead to leakage and premature drying out of the rubbers.
Standard window rubbers do not have a trim groove; these rubbers were frequently used by Volkswagen on the cheaper VW models and all VW Buses up to 1967. For the VW Beetle, the window rubbers are available separately in addition to complete sets for all other models, individually.
The cause of leakage is, in most cases, due to the rubber not fitting properly to the bodywork; with pre-formed corners, the rubber fits perfectly to the bodywork, making leakage impossible.
Mounting window rubbers is easiest with a piece of string, and you do it as follows:
1. Clamp the rubber around the glass
2. Place a piece of string in the groove that will later fall into the bodywork
3. Lubricate the window rebate with, for example, dish soap
4. Press the window with rubber and string against the rebate
5. Slowly pull the string from the inside so that the rubber falls over the raised bodywork edge
6. Once mounted, press the window firmly into the rubber everywhere and check from the inside that the rubber is properly seated in the rebate everywhere
Mounting the window rubbers only works if you are two people; one presses the window firmly into the rebate and the other slowly pulls the string out from between the rubber from the inside. Where the string meets, overlap them a little; this will make it easier when pulling in the window later.
