This seal prevents oil from leaking out of the gearbox along the shift shaft towards the engine - and as you know: oil on your engine block is not really what you want. The ring is located precisely in the nose of the gearbox where the shift shaft exits - and after fifty years - such a rubber simply starts to wear out. Replace it now and save yourself trouble later with oil stains and rust formation. It is recommended to combine this with a new oil plug and other seals from the shifting mechanism for a thorough overhaul.
