This seal is located at the bottom of your steering column and prevents dirt and moisture from entering the steering mechanism. Over time, the rubber becomes porous and loses its grip, allowing water and sand to enter. Replacing it is simple and inexpensive, and it prevents severe rust on the steering gear. Combine this with a new steering column bush if it is also worn.
