These rubber strips prevent oil from leaking out along the engine lid and ensure that you don't have to constantly top up under the hood. On a Karmann Ghia - where the engine is regularly visible - neat oil consumption is - of course - the goal. This part sits between the valve cover and the engine block - so it's not something you want to do again quickly. Combine this with a new valve cover gasket for a completely renewed seal.
