This galvanized spring keeps your engine lid securely in place and prevents it from popping open while driving. It is the replacement part - OEM 111 827 331 - and is now difficult to find in good condition. The galvanization ensures that it won't easily rust - especially important as it's directly exposed to the elements. Combine this with a new engine lid seal and you're all set.
