This external voltage regulator (OEM 043 903 803A) ensures that your alternator provides the correct charging voltage to your battery and electrical system. On T2 and Karmann Ghia models - this regulator is mounted outside the alternator - making replacement much easier than internal variants. Regularly check your charging voltage with a multimeter - as a failing regulator will leave you with a dead battery. Combine this with a new alternator pulley for optimal performance.
