The standard pulley for Type 1 engines (OEM 113 105 251G) controls the drive for your alternator and water pump, so without it, your engine won't run properly. This is the original black version that fits almost all air-cooled VWs from the 1950s to the 1970s. Replace it if you notice your belt slipping or if the grooves are worn. Combine this with a new fan belt and alternator drive belt for a complete overhaul.
