The oil thermostat regulates your engine oil temperature by optimizing coolant flow. When starting cold, it blocks the oil cooler to help your engine reach operating temperature faster, and once it's warm enough, the cooling opens up. A properly functioning thermostat prevents your engine from sustaining cold or heat damage, and you also have a preferred setting for your engine temperature. This part fits T1, T2a, T2b, T3, Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 181, and Type 4. Combine this with a new pair of thermostat housings and a maintenance kit for oil and coolant filters.
