The oil thermostat regulates your engine oil temperature by optimizing coolant flow. When starting cold - it blocks the oil cooler to help your engine reach operating temperature faster - and once it's warm enough - the cooling opens up. A properly functioning thermostat prevents your engine from sustaining cold or heat damage - and you also have a preferred setting for your engine temperature. This part fits T1 - T2a - T2b - T3 - Beetle - Karmann Ghia - Type 181 - and Type 4. Combine this with a new pair of thermostat housings and a maintenance kit for oil and coolant filters.
