The valve spring keeps your valve timing under control and ensures that your valve tappets fit properly. This is the original VW spec for the T2a, T2b, T3, and Type 4 engines (OEM 021 109 623E). They gradually wear down and require replacement as soon as you hear engine noises or experience a drop in performance. Combine these with a new valve seal and you'll be completely ready for a decent overhaul.
