The aluminum crankcase holds the engine block together and protects everything underneath. This is the standard version for T1, T2a, T2b, Type 3, Karmann Ghia, and Type 181. A sturdy construction that will last you several decades, as long as you tighten the bolts properly and don't neglect the gasket. Combine this with a new gasket set for a complete overhaul of your crankcase.
