These gearbox plugs seal the openings in the casting where internal channels meet. You need three per gearbox, and they are under tension because they work against oil pressurization. For classic air-cooled VWs such as the T1, T2, and Beetle, these are OEM numbers 113 311 599, which you better replace in threes at once. Combine this set with a new gearbox gasket for a neatly finished overhaul.
