This rubber sealing ring sits between the bearing cover and the rear axle - preventing lubricating oil from leaking. It's a small part that's easy to overlook - but without a good seal - you'll quickly have a leaky rear axle. VW used this ring on T1 - Type 3 - Karmann Ghia - and Type 181 models. Combine this with fresh rear axle oil and a new screw for the bearing cover while you're at it.
