This oil seal sits where your rear axle passes through the transmission casing and keeps the oil inside where it belongs. If it starts to leak, you'll lose oil and get rust on your rear axle, so this is a preventative maintenance part that you'd better not ignore. Combine this with a new oil hose and oil pan gasket for a complete rear axle overhaul.
