The rubber couplings between your gear lever rod and the gearbox hanger wear out fairly quickly, especially if you like to shift gears often. This set of two (OEM 311 711 233) ensures that the gears feel nice and tight again and that you no longer have play in the gearstick. Replace them at the same time as the other rubbers of your drivetrain and you will have a smoothly operating shifting system. Combine these couplings with a new shift cable or shift wire for the complete picture.
