This upper suspension ball joint for the front axle is part of your Type 3's suspension system and connects the steering system to the wheel. After years of use, this ball joint wears out, leading to play in the front wheels, which is noticeable in the steering feel and road holding. VW supplied this part under number 311 405 361B/C, and replacement is advisable if you notice the steering becoming looser or the wheels no longer tracking straight. Combine this with the lower suspension ball joint and the steering shaft for a complete overhaul of your front axle.
