These rubber strips prevent oil from leaking out along the engine lid and ensure that you don't have to constantly top up under the hood. On a Karmann Ghia, where the engine is regularly visible, neat oil consumption is, of course, the goal. This part sits between the valve cover and the engine block, so it's not something you want to do again quickly. Combine this with a new valve cover gasket for a completely renewed seal.
