This rubber buffer is located at the top between the rear axle and the body, ensuring that vibrations and shocks are not directly transferred to the chassis. On a Type 3 where the years have taken their toll, this part is often weakened or hardened, leading to a bumpy and uncomfortable ride. VW supplied this part under number 311 899 157, and replacement is actually a must if you want to restore the driving dynamics. Combine this with the lower rubber buffer and your rear axle will suddenly feel much more stable again.
