This classic fuel cap with external closure (343 201 551) fits almost all air-cooled VWs and is much stronger than you'd think. The 70mm size is standard for T2 - as well as for Beetle and Karmann Ghia - and the external closure ensures you won't have trouble with internal mechanisms getting stuck. Especially useful if you drive a lot of classic routes and don't want just any cap. Combine this cap with a new fuel tank or a complete fuel system overhaul for optimal reliability.
