This rubber latch buffer prevents your tailgate from rattling while driving and ensures a neat seal. The part sits between the latch and the tailgate - so it really does wear out after years. VW number 211 829 223 is a handy reference in case you've lost the original. Combine this with a new rubber sealing lip under the tailgate for a completely refreshed latch.
