This ring sits behind the tailgate lock and holds the strike plate in place. Without this ring - your lock can wobble and your tailgate won't close properly. The part is universally applicable to air-cooled VWs and made to original specifications (OEM 211 829 215). Combine this with a new tailgate lock if you're already working on your latch.
